Microgaming PlayItForward Soapbox Race Will Return

06.12.2018

ISLE OF MAN – On Saturday 31 August 2019, the Microgaming PlayItForward Soapbox Race will return to the slopes of central Douglas for the fifth year.

Supported once again by Microgaming’s community-driven initiative PlayItForward, next year’s adrenaline-fueled competition promises to be wilder than ever.

This year’s event raised £1,984 for Hyperbaric Isle of Man through donations and soapbox sponsorship, taking the total collected for the local charity since 2014 to over £11,000. The fun, family-friendly race on 1 September saw enthusiastic crowds gather on the streets of the capital to witness the thrills and spills of madcap karts.

Driven by some of the island’s most daring racers, a total of 24 homemade gravity-powered karts hurtled down Upper Church Street towards Barrack Street, navigating white-knuckle jumps, slippery slopes and tight turns along the way.

Generally, the daring driver of the bright orange kart, stormed to victory and took first place after it careened down the course in an impressive 25.73 seconds. Delissimos came a close second with 25.83 seconds, followed by Last of the Summer Whine in third place and Team Chaos in fourth.

Further information on the course, kart specifications and race rules, along with photos of previous competitions, can be found at douglassoapbox.com.

For those thinking of building their karts ahead of next year’s event, further details including the chosen charity will be announced over the coming months.

It goes without saying that we could not pull off this amazing event year after year without the support from our title sponsor, Microgaming, our media partner 3FM and everyone who gives their time, support and sponsorship, including Southern Young Farmers, SAS Events, ELS, Eye-Spy Security and Newsbeat. We are so pleased that Microgaming PlayItForward will be sponsoring the event again next year. We can’t wait to deliver an even more entertaining event for the community.

So much hard work goes on behind the scenes to make sure the balance of entertainment and safety are just right. A huge thank you to Elliott for organising the event and to every volunteer who helped on the night. Congratulations to all the riders – we can’t wait to see what creative contraptions fly down Upper Church Street next year!
